Protest Music
I’ve been deeply engrossed in protest music of all sorts, not only the anti-war stuff but dating back to, I shit you not, one of the biggest bands of the 1800s, the Hutchinson Family Singers. Now that’s rock music.
This is all for my newest article for subter which is due on Wednesday. I will link to it when it’s published. It’s all about the history of protest music and what’s happening in the genre today.
The title is what’s not coming too well for me right now. Any help would be appreciated. Other than that, it’s basically done except for some sourcing and fine-tuning.
In my research for it, I stumbled on this song, which I had surprisingly not heard of. It’s by Bright Eyes, and as far as I know has not been officially recorded, but there was a live version on the cd “Motion Sickness.” Below is the video for “When the President Talks To God,” which is, I believe, one of the best protest songs I have ever heard, in the classic vein of Ochs or Dylan.

Oh, and here’s a classy one regarding stay the course.
Laura Bush, asked what she says to people who ask about Iraq, from September 18, 2006: “Well, I say the – exactly what the president says, that we need to stay the course.”
Oops!

I’m finding myself listening to a lot more Rage Against the Machine lately.
Man, what they might have to say if they were still around.
Zack’s head may have exploded already at the sound and fury of GWB for all we know..

You should check out this song he did with DJ Shadow called “March of Death.” Pretty intense. You can download it here.

As a fan of Bright Eyes, I find myself saddened and claim negligence on my duties as a fan that I was not aware of this song.
I found your site through BlogMad and am pleased that I did.
I will, with your permission, add you to my links.
Feel free to let me know if that is ok with you before I do it.

Brad,
I’m really interested in protest music as well, and hadn’t heard this song before.
I was really interested to find you bringing this up. I just followed your link from my blog after posting another protest song that I saw on the Colbert Report. It’s by Randy Newman and called Political Science.

i was watching pbs last night and they had a 2 hours show on the 60’s…and i am sitting there watching the students of our country, the youth of our country..protesting by the thousands…protesting the war, protesting equal rights, protesting for women’s rights..out there risking their education, their freedom their lives for what they believed strongly in…where are our demonstrators now..where are our youth’s protesting for their rights?…pretty fucking scary…
they are text messaging each other about paris, britney, the latest new model, who won the dance contest, who got thrown off the island and does this skirt make my ass big..?

Oh, they’re out there. They’re just pushed aside into “free speech zones” or locked up as soon as they get out of hand since we’re such a great “democracy.”
